The Cottage Family Restaurant
About This Spot
Stepping into The Cottage Family Restaurant feels like slipping into a well-loved pause in the day—a place where the pace slows just enough to savor simple moments. Nestled in the heart of Mill Hall, this familiar neighborhood spot carries a quiet warmth that lingers in the air, inviting guests to settle in as if they were welcomed into a friend’s kitchen rather than a dining room.
The atmosphere is unpretentious yet thoughtful, a blend of soft morning light filtering through windows and the gentle hum of friendly conversations. It’s the kind of place where families gather for breakfast, couples pause after a busy morning, and travelers find a comforting table away from the road. Throughout the day, the hum evolves naturally, balancing the soft clinks of plates and the steady rhythm of kitchen activity with genuine, easygoing service.
Food here serves as a humble, familiar thread weaving the experience together. The menu doesn’t rush or dazzle but instead offers comforting dishes that echo home-cooked flavors—from hearty breakfasts with eggs and toast to satisfying plates like the Philly cheese steak or tender home-style steaks. It’s the kind of cooking that invites you to take a moment, savor each bite, and let the taste bring back memories or create new ones. Whether you’re digging into a slice of classic apple pie or enjoying one of their creamy, thick milkshakes, there’s a distinct sense that this is food made with care over flash.
The Cottage’s charm lies not just in its meals but in its spirit—reflected in the kindness of the staff who welcome you like an old friend, and in casual conversations shared at neighboring tables. It’s a place where the everyday becomes a little more special, where the familiar rhythms of a family restaurant remind you that good food and genuine company remain at the heart of a satisfying day.

I recently visited this restaurant and had a mixed experience. The staff members were charming and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere that added to the overall dining experience. However, I have to mention that the food was good. While it wasn't outstanding, it also wasn't disappointing. One aspect that significantly impacted my experience was the cleanliness of the men's bathroom. Unfortunately, it was in a poor state and appeared to have been neglected, however the women’s bathroom was clean. Despite these shortcomings, the charming staff did their best to make the dining experience enjoyable. With some improvements in the food quality and cleanliness of the facilities, this restaurant has the potential to provide a more consistent and satisfying experience. Overall, I would rate this restaurant as average. While the staff was delightful, the food was just okay, and the state of the men's bathroom was subpar. If you're looking for a place with friendly staff, it may be worth a visit, but keep in mind the room for improvement in other aspects.

I love the Cottage ice cream! They have a bunch of delicious flavors and always give you generous portions for very reasonable prices. Their milkshakes are very creamy and delicious, and the ice cream is fairly hard and not overly melty. It does get a little icy sometimes, like it’s melted and refrozen.

Definitely a home-cooked meal atmosphere. Stopped here after work and REALLY glad I didn’t settle for the boring chains nearby. This was a delicious meal. Lemon and pepper shrimp = A+

Ohh this place is so good. I am glad we stopped there. If you're on the road or just in town, stop and eat here.

Stopped on our way back from a long trip. It was about a half hour until closing and they welcomed us with open arms. Great food! Down to earth, family dinners at reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Also had a few fresh, farm veggies for purchase. Would highly recommend!!

If you happen to travel through central PA on I-80, and need a break or get a meal, you may want to try this place out. It features a unique A frame building structure that's straight from the 70's. You'll find a good variety of comfort food served here, similar to most diners. Portions served were plenty, and tasty as well. Pricings are competitive for the area. Staff was helpful and attentive. Be sure to save some room for dessert, as their cookie ice cream sandwiches are very addictive.

An excellent local diner staffed with wonderful friendly staff. The food is like what you would expect from your grandmother. The homemade pies and ice cream are to die for. Prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended.

We stopped here while on the way to Chicago. No joke that the cole slaw was amazing!! I would come back for that and the peach pie a la mode! The actual lunch wasn’t all that special. I got pork and sauerkraut (a special for that day) and the sauerkraut was very salty! My husband got the chicken bacon ranch wrap was fine.
